The simple answer is the turbo works on the difference in heat and pressure from the inlet to the outlet. The reason our 3 inch expansion pipes works so well is because we are growing the pipe as soon as possible after the turbo and doing it with the the least amount of turbulence. The labree design is not doing this as it keeps the turbine pipe small even longer than are older design. We have done over 300 dyno pulls just testing small changes in our exhaust parts just to gain the knowledge of what effects what to perfect our exhaust products. The old split downpipes have 6 psi of backpressure in the downpipe at 15 PSI. The expansion downpipes have zero backpressure at 25 PSI ;-) Typically the boost goes up 2 to 3 PSI just from installing the 3 inch expansion pipes over the old style. The gains are even amazing on stock turbos because it simply makes any turbo more efficient by the design.
