Message It has recently occurred to me that there is no reason to gut your pre-cats and cats. Most people will think it is worth it to get the performance gain from gutting out all of their cats, but what they are really doing is throwing away money. If your area requires emissions testing then obviously you should hang on to them (duh), and just front the money for the downpipes and testpipes. However, if you don't live in an area with emissions testing, then there is another way to upgrade your car, for FREE.

Step one: Locate several local scrap yards. Do not try junk yards, as they do not buy catalytic converters, or if they do, they will not pay as much.

Step two:Ask how much they buy catalytic converters for. Ours are "Medium size, and Small size" for the test pipes and pre-cats (respectively). Be sure to mention that they are Import catalytic 's aswell. Be sure to shop around for the best deal. Most scrap yards in my area will offer about $40 a piece or more for each of our main cats and about $20 for each of our pre-cats.)

Step three: Remove pipes and take to scrap yard. Get cash.

Step four: Buy testpipes and downpipes. Obviously you will need to settle for those bargain brand $100 eBay specials that I'm sure most forum members are aware of. They look like this:

and are made by Meghan racing, and various other vendors, but honestly they are all almost identical.

but honestly, for a free trade, most people will not argue with settling with these pipes. It ends up being a decent weight reduction as well. Another advantage is that it is easier to remove the transmission and starter with these pipes, and you won't have rusty old broken exhaust bolts to deal with.

Hope this helps someone! Enjoy the quicker spool!

Notes: Due to the downtime you will have while waiting for your new pipes to come, I feel it is best to do this during a tranny drop, or some other involved process that will put your Z on 'stands for a while. I know removing the tranny makes it a lot easier to remove the DS pre-cat anyway. If you have a 96 you will need to install bungs in the test pipes to put your secondary o2's in, or find a way to eliminate them as you will throw a CEL. It is also a good time to change your o2 sensors (in the DP's, if they need replacing) as they are more difficult to get to with the pipes in.

Do you people have souls? Seriously, this is pretty fucked up."
