Message The fact is that a modified exhaust is not illegal as long as it meets the db as described in state law.

The CA law reads: "27151. (a) No person shall modify the exhaust system of a motor vehicle in a manner which will AMPLIFY or INCREASE the noise emitted by the motor of the vehicle"

All exhaust systems reduce the noise emitted by the motor. Keep it under 95db and you are legal. There is no provision in the law stating that it has to be the same as the original. Mufflers go bad and need to be replaced a suitable replacement is acceptable as long as it meets db regulations.

Section b covers nonoem equipment:

(b) For the purposes of exhaust systems installed on motor vehicles with a manufacturer's gross vehicle weight rating of less than 6,000 pounds, other than motorcycles, a sound level of 95 dbA or less, when tested in accordance with Society of Automotive Engineers Standard J1169 May 1998, complies with this section. Motor vehicle exhaust systems or parts thereof include, but are not limited to, nonoriginal exhaust equipment."

< 6000lbs, I know we are close but not there, you need 95db or less "exhaust system or parts thereof include but are not limited to, NONORIGINAL equipment"

Again meet the db and you are legal.

Mike
