Message and they had an '08 update CD that I requested (free of charge). It arrived last week, so the turn around isn't too bad. The update added more points of interest and it's supposed to update the maps. There's a road not too far from my office that shows up on my nav as a dead end even though it's now extended to connect with another street. I'll have to check to see if they updated that.

I think if I wanted/needed another map update I would imagine there will be a charge for it.

The only subscriptions you have to deal with are traffic/weather services - at least that's how it works for the Garmin.
