Message shorter gears "feel" peppier because it is quicker to rev through the same range of rpms for a given gear. However in comparing actual time to pickup *speed* (ie. from x mph to y mph), there is not necessarily an advantage. In fact, longer gears will be quicker for certain ranges and shorter gears will be quicker for other ranges.
