Message	is by having your oil tested for contaminates. I know of 3\4 ton diesel trucks that switched between K&N and standard paper pleated. each time, the paper pleated kept out more dirt than the K&N. Maybe these were extreme conditions, don't remember. Any one run a "filter skin" over their K&N? (looks like a nylon stocking)
