Message But you're not far off. On tourist drives, if you wreck, don't warn others and do cause a full closure you can be liable for everything from armco repair to track fines and fees. If you're out there caught with a timing device (very common after crashes) and you're on a tourist lap, you're in deep shit. If you're out there manufacturer testing and have a pre-arranged run (still open to the public, they don't shut it down for hardly anyone), the rules are somewhat different. Though again, it is considered a public road and they do police it as any other.

Jeez not to mention lap times in different conditions, with different drivers, AND different track configurations. I have seen many videos of "laps" that don't even include the long straight, they start after it and pull off right at the entrance of the final straight.

Yeah, all of this is great to point out if someone were trying to claim the Nordschleife, for example, was a strict scientific testing ground but no one is saying that. Though compared to most testing, it's pretty damn good when you think about it. On any given day any normal result can be scoffed at because of the myriad of variables but when a car hits a very low time, that is then verified, it still stands out as very impressive. It's no different than breaking a record at a standard oval track where "conditions and drivers" vary wildly. I can't speak to whatever shitty videos you've seen where they cut out sections but you don't shoot the herd because of a few bad cows.

Long story short, you can't treat track times like the "fanboys rioting in the streets" over the GT-R (I myself wouldn't own one) but to compare them to peak dyno numbers and otherwise claiming them as junk is totally naive in my book. Most of what you claimed exists in most forms of testing. In fact, looking at what the mainstream follows (magazines, website test-drives, etc), the Nürburgring is far more static as a whole, especially when testing the upper echelon of automobiles. In my opinion =)

Why the hell are we up so late on Christmas morning discussing this though? ;)
