I wasn’t out of third gear yet and I noticed a fender in my peripheral view that was so close I could have touched it with my elbow. I immediately hit the horn and leaned right (already in the outside lane) to avoid being scraped and he just followed me over. I’m now driving with two tires on a sidewalk and two in the gutter and he still is right there. He comes towards me again, I cut more and now have right tires in grass and left ones on grass, straddling a sidewalk with a fire hydrant rapidly approaching, worse yet there is a bridge abutment a few feet behind the hydrant. The guy pulls away a little, I swerve right to miss the hydrant and left to miss the bridge then he comes back over on me and we have contact. Once again, up on the curb now rapidly approaching an intersection and oncoming traffic. I’ve been slowly braking the whole time, but afraid to really stand on them with the different surfaces I was on. He then cuts hard left and I’ve got two choices, hit the traffic light pole head on or try my luck into oncoming traffic at this intersection. I chose the second and came to a stop nose to nose with a Z28 in the middle of a turn. This guy apparently saw us coming (no way he could have stopped so quickly otherwise) and waved me on shouting, “go get him”. I did, called the cops in route and told them I was chasing someone that just side swiped me. They asked typical make/model questions and were waiting on me providing a tag number. There were at least 8 cars in between us and then I saw him turn off. I called out the street to the police and they told me to back off. I told them I would as soon as I got a tag, they said, “NO, back off.” Something about “danger down that street”. “We have the vehicle description, that is enough.” This Really pissed me off! I’ve worked with, trained and shot with law enforcement officers enough to realize the last thing they need is unnecessary distractions during a call. So out of respect to whatever situation was going on down that street, I stopped. To sum it up, I don’t think I’ve ever been that mad in my life. I stopped the car to inspect the damage (really dreading this part) and the only thing that happened was my mirror was folded forward with paint marks on it. I couldn't believe it, it sounded so loud! I rubbed the marks with my thumb and after a bit, they came off with an ever so slight scratch that no one else would likely notice. The front spoiler was fine. That area has curbs the height of wake up bumps on the highway. I was SO fortunate with that as well. I went to the police station as they requested, was interviewed by an officer, and filled out the appropriate report. Mr. 1970ish Monte Carlo, you better watch out!!! On my way to work this morning, I was at the same intersection and saw the marks in the grass. They were too damn close to the hydrant! I don’t know of any other car I’ve ever driven that could have responded so quickly and solidly, and never skidded once! Hats off to the designers of this car. I feel I have my health to thank it for today. With all the “I totaled my Z today” posts we see, I thought you guys might want to hear about one that came out all right.
