His argument hinges on an estimated shift time he pulled from Wikipedia. I looked up the same statistic, and it has no sourced referenced - so it's literally a made-up statistic.
Given that a high-performance automatic transmission can shift much more quickly than the required 1/3rd second (proven by his own references) and my contention that any driver worth their salt can shift within that same amount of time, it stands to reason that his argument is moot at best. Add in the fact that people have been using shorter gears for better drag times for decades, and his argument is completely out the window - both on paper and in the real world.
