Message crank is spinning whipping up air and also oil droplets from the rod bearings. The crankcase also has some pressure from the downward force of the backside of the piston and the blow by gases. If you don't control the pressure or the oil slinging, it will cost hp at higher rpm. I saw an article on F1 Nissan Infinity engine where they put the crankcase under vacuum, the engine gained about 50HP at 10,000 + rpm. On some dragsters, they install vacuum pumps as part of the accesorry to pump the air out of the crackcase.
