I drove down the street today and all a sudden my radar detector/clock/and stereo cut out for 1 second and came back on. I didnt think nothing of it till it happend again. I was like "the cars running no problem" but just to be sure i stopped off by a gas station. I shut the car off then tried to start it and nothing. I got no warning lights, no starter, nuthin. It was dead. I asked the mechanic what the problem is and he said "U need a new alternator". I was like, but my cars running fine, im just not getting power when the cars off and If the alt was bad the car wouldnt run at all right? So the guy boosted the car and it started right up. He then checked the battery terminals with a voltmeter and said the same thing. "U need a new alt. Itll run u at 340 dollars". I said, but if my cars running how can it be the alt? He told me that its making just enough to keep the car going but not enouph to charge the battery. Something didnt sound right and i didnt think that was the problem so i left and drove off. There was no problem at all with the cars performance. I got home, lifted the hood and started looking around. My friends dad came (hes a truck mechanic) and did the same thing as the mechanic i went to (check terminals with voltmeter). He found that the terminals were not making contact with the battery even though there was no sign of that white powder. I took off the terminal and low and behold this nasty brownish nast came out. I cleaned it and put it back on. Car started right up withought a problem.
Moral is that the mechanic i went to tried to rip me off and make a 100% profit knowing that the problem was just some corrosion. Hes a proffesional and should check that first above anything. I never went back to him (nore will i ever) but thats some nerve. A lesson to all. Make sure u get at least a second opinion before u dash out $$$.
