Your only liable to him for your bounced check to the limit imposed my FL law which is 25% or $50.00 whichever is greater or something like that. HIS bank being that he is a BUSINESS account holder should have waived the fee for him, mine has done that many times for me when people have written me bad checks. As far as HIS checks that he wrote bouncing, that could be messy, technically I don't think you are liable for them. How much was your machine work? Was it enough to cause him to bounce a bunch of checks? Just wondering if the guy is full of crap or not. You could call up the BBB, they should be able to answer your question..... Let me know what they say, I'm curious now....
