Message I don't know much about the newer Canon SD models but I'm sure they're fine. I haven't kept up with the point & shoot cameras over the last few years, but I've seen a bunch of good pics from the older SD630s.

Entry level SLRs are getting much more affordable so they might be worth looking at if you don't mind carrying a larger camera. A used Canon Rebel XT (aka 350D) can be found for about $350-400 USD. The kit lens (18-55) is about $50 and a 50 f/1.8 goes for about $75. Things tend to get a bit more expensive once you start going with other lenses and accessories (tripod, camera bags, hotshoe flashes, filters, etc) but you can still get a good bargain set up for less than $600-800.
