your clutch is. in order to change the throw out bearing you need to drop the tranny. this way, you'll save labor costs if you need to replace the clutch anytime soon. also, you'll want to replace the main rear seal while you're at it. the throw out bearing itself isn't expensive... it's the labor that gets you. figure on spending at least $250-300 to get it done. (or try doing it yourself... not that hard if you've got some mechanical skills).
