Message I always check my oil first thing in the morning, before I start the car up at all. Reason: if you start your car, the oil is circulating and moving all around, so when you check your dipstick, the oil isn't "settled". Therefore, you might get a reading that is showing you have more oil than you really do (reading more towards full on the dipstick). If you check it before you start the car at all, it is totally settled and will give you an accurate reading as to whether you need to add more or if you're good.
That's what I've always done, think about it, makes sense.
