you don't have any, who stamps your drawings? FAA DERs. Designated Engineering Representative. And even then, they are not PEs. Infact, many DERs do not have even have degrees. For real. They have 'equivelant' degrees based on experience. [ http://www.faa.gov/other_visit/aviation_industry/designees_delegations/designee_types/der/ ] Then, you specialize in systems only, or electrical, or whatever. Rarely do you specialize in more then two disciplines. It's similar in space systems as well... but is not completely maintained via the FAA DERsWho assumes the liability for the designs? The DER, or the company. I don't know how it works in the US, but in Canada an Engineer is required to be registered and governed by their professional association to protect the public interest & safety. (I don't know exactly what you do Nick but if it involves designing and building airplanes I would think that is fairly critical work.) The only PEs i've ever seen are Civil Engineers... Public works if you will. And I've never even met a PE. :You cannot "engineer" anything in Canada legally without being registered. You can potentially go to jail for falsifying your title here.
not so much here. It seems to be industry specific.
