Now, whether or not you want to involve your insurance and rather pay out of pocket is up to you. Will your rates go up as a result? I don't know, that's up to your carrier- they may and that is their prerogative. I damaged one of my vehicles a few years back (backed into a fire hydrant) and I felt the noble thing to do was to pay for the damage myself since it was my stupidity. In retrospect, if my rates had gone up, they probably wouldn't have gone up to the tune of the repairs. Hindsight being 20/20, I would have let the insurance company deal with it. If it makes you feel any better, look at it like you said- you were going to replace the hood on your own dime anyway, the nice new windshield is just a bonus.
