I can vouch for all of them, my brother has had a 79 euro, an 82, and currently has an 87 S4, and my dad has a 93 gts. (all 928's obviously). The euros are quicker, but really don't have any torque to boast about at all. The S4's are actually quite fast, and sound just downright sexy with exhaust (one of my favorite v8 sounds). But in your buddy's case between a 16v 83 and a TT Z, I would have to pick the Z. Much more power potential, cheaper parts/labor, and much more aftermarket support as well. The 928's are classic and always will be, but like I said the pre 85's just wouldn't be as fun.
