I haven't done an R230V on the Z, but I have done it for Toyota 4WD 3rd members. They are different, but the concept is the same. You have to shim the pinion to get the depth correct. Then the preload on the pinion has to be set properly with the pinion nut. The ring gear and the spider gears must be set on the carrier in such a manner that the spacing between the ring and the pinion (the backlash) is within spec. The R230V is like domestic truck differentials such as the Dana's, where you adjust this backlash using shims. With the Toyota truck differentials, you have a set of adjusting rings. IMHO, reshimming it two times is nothing, as the process is a trial-and-error process. If they have done it before, it still takes two a minimum of reshims to get it perfect.
