They are larger on the skirt area smaller towards the top . Those specs in the service manual refer to acceptable taper wear tolerence. .0004 of an inche is very small. About 1/2 of 1/1000th. An experienced engine machinist has to measure the taper on the piston and then calculate the piston to wall clearance .
