Message	from Texas and the tags on your license plates aren't expired, it's not like you have to register your car in the state of CA. As long as it is registered in Texas, you won't have to pass smog here. When I first moved to CA my dad was leasing a car from TN. He never got CA plates, but kept the TN registration current. We never had any issues with cops hassling us about that. If for some reason you feel the need to get your car smogged out here, welcome to the land of people who love bribes. It will cost you between $250 and $350 to pass smog with flying colors! If you so happened to get pulled over, good luck. Who even knows the fun they could have with your car. But if you don't drive like an absolute asshat, you shouldn't get pulled over to begin with. Cops are so used to seeing fixed up cars out here, it's not like they purposely target you without justification. Now if you do get pulled over and have TX plates and a CA drivers license, that will raise questions... so keep your TX license. Say you are out here for some car show and you don't have access to a trailer to tow your car around. You should really fear CA drivers more than smog or cops.
