Message Speaking from someone who painted their own car, the prep work (just taking off moldings and masking the car off) can take almost a full day of work. Body work can take an obscenely long time if the car has lots of door dings/dents. Large damage can take even longer. I estimate that I spent at least 18 days or so of labor doing body work.

That said, I don't exactly have a lot of time on the clock for body work so an experienced pro shouldn't take nearly as long.

Paint, real car paint, primer, prep coats, clear, thinner, reducers, etc costs money. Base coat/clear coat will always look the best. Single stage paints are so-so but can still look good. B/C can cost over 1k in supplies alone!

On top of all that, you'll have at least another 20 hours of wet sanding and buffing to get that awesome finish that everyone wants and then another day of labor to reassemble the car, take off the masking tape, put on the moldings etc.

Good luck with the el cheapo paint job, but I'd expect to pay no less than 5 grand on a decent paint job. Either that, or DIY

Alex
