The wheels are a foot wide. 17 inch wheels barely miss the suspension components. Stock TT wheels fit perfectly. If you widen them, they will hit the rear steering arm (or the traction rod if you have an R200), the spring perch of the strut, the upper control arm, and the lower control arm.

There are, however, wheel companies that can widen wheels on the front side of the hub, adding the machined lip look to just about any wheel($$$$). But with the way the TT wheels fit, adding to the front of the hub will make them stick out of the fender.
