I just went through the ageold tire question. I settled on Michelin Pilots. I had RE71's - now discontinued but the RE730's are their replacements. The RE71's were sticky as hell and hard sidewalls, very loud with age, lasted very short time and developed a harsh ride as they aged. The RE730s are similar but probably more refined. The pilots made my car feel 5 years newer, much quieter and smoother ride but I am not sure yet about grip. Certainly wetweather straightline is awesome as is dry - but haven't tested them too much on the twisties. It sounds like you are looking for a less expensive tire - RE730s as well as AVS sports are highly recommended.
