Aside from being a conflict with Communist china whom our nation did not want to engage directly and the vietnamese didnt care to fight on their own behalf. Nam has nothing more in common with the current situation than on the superficial level of it being an "unpopular conflict". Nowhere did extremely dangerous and violent religious extremism and fascism come into play with vietnam.
Nowhere did the US come to the support of an invaded ally years prior to spark years of hostility in vietnam.
Nowhere did vietnam bring on it's own invasion by the US thru trumping up and overbluffing it's military capabilities to keep it's neighbors in check.
Nowhere was vietnam in constant violation of UN resolution after UN rsolution, all the while actively firing on (or attempting to) US military personnel and aircraft.
Nowhere was vietnam harboring, training, and actively giving aid to planners and executors of the single largest act of mass homicide within the US, with many more in the works. But I guess we just want "to steal all the oil" don't we?
Seems like the alaskan wildlife parks would have been a much easier invasion to pull off, for an oil resource of greater quantity. A few thousand tranq darts for the polar bears, a few million firecrackers to scare away all the snow rabbits, and our sinister plan would have been complete. I am sorry you were drafted to go to Nam if you are resentful of the governments choice to engage us in that conflict, however purple hearts are not trump cards for poitical discussion. John Kerry would have been president had he not tried to play the military card to gain extra support, and had he not opened his mouth in those debates.
