engines for our vendors do not plastiguage during assembly. They mic the parts and install the bearings. So long as your measuring equipment is calibrated properly, you do the simple math correctly, and choose the proper bearing, there really is no need to plastigauge - plastigauge is far less accurate and a seasoned, competent engine builder will usually chuckle at the prospect of using that as an accurate method; their bore gauges and calipers are far more accurate. I just recommend the plastigauge to DIYers as an additional step as margins for error on their part is much higher than someone who does it everyday for a living.
