You're actually giving rather sound advice overall but a bit too definitive. There's a higher risk of bending a rim/lip/wheel but it isn't certain. Thankfully, he's looking into a Volk wheel which is pretty high quality and likely to withstand the normal bumps on the road. IMHO, 17s are a good sweet spot in weight/rotating mass/brake clearance for the Z but as you go up you trade asthetics for performance. I, too, like the trade-off for 18s but not everyone agrees as you can see.
