Message it's strongly recommended to go with the later style injectors. For our cars, there are two versions: '90 ~94 and '95+. Some folks have experienced earlier-than-expected failure rates on the '90 ~ '94 injector styles while people that use the '95 + injectors have not. Unfortunately, the later style injectors are not a direct drop-in replacement for the earlier style injectors. The lower plenum (or also known as the lower intake manifold) needs to be machined to accept the later version of the fuel rail (this is what the injectors mount to).

JWT performs the service to machine the lower plenum at a fairly reasonable price.

Other things to consider if you upgrade to the later style injectors:

- the '95+ fuel rails (already mentioned above)
- the electrical connector for the injector needs to be changed to the later style connectors.
(Even if you weren't going with the newer style injectors, you would most likely need to replace the connectors because the original ones become very brittle and crack. They also have a lot of corrosion build up which can lead to other issues.)
- along with the fuel rails, you will need new insulators (these are rubber rings that go on the bottom of each fuel injector location and seal the fuel rail to the lower plenum).
- speaking of orings, you will need to get new orings for the fuel injectors - do not reuse the old ones, they'll most likely start to leak.
- as others have already mentioned, you will need to get the ECU updated to work with the 555 injectors. I personally recommend JWT for this upgrade.

Other items related to this upgrade (I haven't read through all of the replies to your other posts, so I may be repeating some things)
- this is an excellent opportunity to upgrade the exhaust system. I suggest the Specialty-Z down pipes (these mount directly on the turbo and are the first part of the exhaust system) as well as their cat-back exhaust.
- since the motor will be out, and you're upgrading the performance of the motor, an upgraded clutch would be a wise choice (I suggest going with the RPS Street Clutch - Specialty-Z carries a full line of RPS clutches). A lightened flywheel would be a good idea as well.
- replace the rear main oil seal (on the engine) while you have it out for the turbo replacement.
- while the intake plenum is off, this would be a good time to have the valve cover gaskets replaced/resealed.
- I'd also consider doing a 120K service (timing belt, water pump, etc..) while the motor is out too. It can be done in the car, but unless you happen to know when the timing belt was replaced (and it was done less than 60K miles ago), you could run the risk of it breaking, and if that happens while the car is in motion, you will have a lot of major damage happen to the motor.

I realize that you indicated this is a starter project which I take to imply that more work will be done down the road. I've tried to suggest things that would be in your (and your husband's) best interest as far as getting to things while you are having the turbo work done. Otherwise, some of the work will have to be repeated if you chose not to do that work now (such as the removing the upper intake plenum to get to the valve covers, or removing the transmission to replace the clutch). If your husband will be doing the work himself, then maybe it's not as critical as I can't think of a better way for someone to get to know every detail of the car than by doing the work themselves.

Sorry for the long-winded reply. I hope this info is helpful and doesn't create more confusion. Lastly, I don't mean to assume that you know nothing about cars and I hope that some of the more basic definitions that I used above provided clarity about what I was trying to say vs. coming across as me "dumbing-down" the conversation.

I wish you the best of luck with this project. Your husband and your new baby daughter (congrats by the way) are very fortunate to have such a thoughtful and giving woman in their lives.

Please keep us posted on the progress and most importantly, get pictures of your husband's face when you present the Z to him.
