got the following response after talking to the DOT...looks bad for individual imports: Nissan did not import the Skyline GT, GTR into the U.S. Motorex (a DOT registered importer) petitioned the agency that the Skyline could be modified to meet U.S. DOT safety standards and EPA e mission requirements. They made structural modifications to the vehicle and c rash tested three vehicles to meet the crash worthiness standards, (there are approximately 36 safety standards applicable to each automobile). Motorex req uested confidentiality from the U.S. DOT regarding the modifications necessary for the vehicle to pass the crash requirements. In addition Motorex spent ad ditional monies testing the vehicle to the other safety standards--all total 3 cars wasted, and approximately 400K spent in testing. Then there was the EP A testing, approx 25K per test. You can become a registered importer and an EPA independent commercial importer (EPA lab costs 300K), you can test the car -remember 400K plus 3 cars, then you can import yours. Or you can import through Motorex.
