Message 1: keep it around for long enough the gas will leak out leaving you with a big useless metal cylinder.
2: You need to have it serviced every year to ensure its not going to grenade on you when you pull the pin and squeeze the handle. The testing itsn't crazy expensive($30+/-) but the refill may very well be.
2: Halon is heavy(as a gas) and expensive as an initial purchase. If your looking for something with similar punch i'd suggest either CO2(it cools the fire and displaces air much like halon) and its cheaper.
3: A dry chem IMHO would be your best bet. Any one of the agents should be suitable for your application as long as its non corrosive to aluminum. Ideally there is a solution produced by most major extinguisher makers usually meant for kitchen applications, known as "Purple K". it comes out in a purple slurry and is dy-no-mite at putting out fire. The only downside is that when it does get hot it turns into a sticky self healing goo. If you ever have to use it you'll be scrubbing the motor down for a while to get it off but it may be better than having to start all over.
