that the contact pattern is square and long. Read your owner's manual, and look at the pictures that show a proper install. It will illustrate proper and improper patterns. The specs usually get the gears in that pattern, but not always, so they (the set up specs) should be viewed as approximate. The pattern should be checked after the ring and pinion are set up. He can do this by coating the gears in machinist blue or using a light coat of white grease. This will show how the ring and pinion contact each other, and allow for adjustments to be made if the contact pattern is off. Hope that is of some help.
