Message and fuel use. I was curious how much fuel was being used, so I hooked up the ecu interface and recorded the values in 5th under load, in 5th with a closed throttle (both at the sme speed), and then at a stop at idle/neutral.

Datascan and the blazt cable showed that my car uses a tiny amount of more fuel injected when the throttle is closed vs. at idle (at the same speed), so small that I would say that there is no noticable fuel savings when in gear w/closed throttle or in neutral (when at speed). I made some movies so people could see what I am talking about...it's somewhat jerky because of the capture program.

Fuel use at idle/closed throttle/neutral (right click, save as)
idle baseline movie

This set the baseline fuel consumption at: 800RPM, speed=0, duty cycle=1.4

Fuel use on the highway, first under load, then in gear w/closed throtle. The movie starts in 4th, at 0:20, I shifted to 5th.
Right before I closed the throttle: 4740RPM, speed=75mph, 70% injector duty cycle.
Fully closed throttle, as indicated by red "Closed tps" flag (at bottom left hand corner) towards the end of the movie, 4700RPM, 2.5% injector duty cycle. This is only slightly more than with the engine in neutral/idle.
