Message 1. Drill hole in door. When you buy new tweeters the back of the box has the dimensions/pattern of the holes you need to mount the speakers (at least all the Alpines I've ever bought have). Obviously drill on the smaller side. I used one of those big hollow drill bits that have the regular bit in the middle. I cut a little "x" in the spot where the middle bit was so it wouldn't tear the vinyl covering on the door panel. When that middle tip went through, I turned the outer part by hand to tear through the vinyl covering part so that wouldn't tear (don't think that's needed though). Then drill completely through. Just make sure you don't go into the actual vents in that area
2. Test fit tweeter in that hole. Obviously you'll need to enlarge the hole since you drilled it on the smaller side. I used a razor blade since I had one handy. I'm sure a Dremel would be easier. Repeat until you can fit the tweeter in the hole firmly
3. Done

The trim ring is more a cup the tweeter fits into that has an extended ring to cover the edges of the hole it fits in. Again, that usually comes with tweeters when you buy them brand new. As I said before, try seeing if a local stereo shop has a set laying around. Sometimes they do.

Don't think of that pic as a finished product - it was not. That pic was just really to show the placement. IIRC I drilled the holes the day that pic was taken, but had to go somewhere and didn't finish at that time. So the trim rings weren't installed in that pic (you can kind of see the rough edges around the tweeter) nor were the tweeters aimed, since they weren't officially mounted at that point.

And as far I as remember, you want the passenger speakers aimed at the driver, and the driver at the passenger. For some reason I want to say that's how I was always told. Regardless, wire them up temporarily and place them around the car to see where you like the sound the best. Then try to figure out how to mount them as close to that spot as you can.

I wish I had more pics of the Z, but I don't. If you still can't figure out what I mean by trim rings, I'll go get pics of the miata since they are the same speakers (well newer, but still Alpine Type Rs or whatever).
