Message	, which is when detonation happens, fuel is injected in the intake stroke just like conventional multi-point fuel injection. What you're mentioning about fuel being injected near TDC is done only under light-load conditions to improve ignition efficiency. Your point about fuel vaporization cooling the engine is well made. Direct injection in gasoline engines looks appealing but we just have to wait and see it's reliability/cost etc. Direct injection for gasoline has been around for a while but it was at a lower pressure and didn't allow injection near TDI. High-pressure direct injection for gasoline is new.
