Your point about fuel vaporization cooling the engine is well made. Direct injection in gasoline engines looks appealing but we just have to wait and see it's reliability/cost etc. Direct injection for gasoline has been around for a while but it was at a lower pressure and didn't allow injection near TDI. High-pressure direct injection for gasoline is new.
