Message To start, I know the Z calls for 10-30w. I follow the old school thinking in that" the higher the mileage on your motor, the thicker the weight of oil you use to allow for worn tolerances and clearances."
Now, I have had 4 Z's since 1987 and my first being a 1979 280zx 2+2 which I always used Castrol GTX 20-50w. I sold it with over 240k miles and the motor was in perfect shape with no issues.
My second Z was a 1986 300zx na and I sold it with over 180k miles and again, I used 20-50w after 100k miles and the motor was perfect.
I have presently(dd) a 1993 na 2+2 which has 175k on it and the motor was also very healthy(that is until I overheated it and lunched it) but again, I used 20-50 and the bottom end was healthy until my stupidity stepped in.
Lastly, My other Z I have presently is a highly modded 1990TT with 120k. After 70k, I started using 20-50w and the oil pressure was reading very good(which I know is obvious) and the bottom end was very healthy. Unfortunately, I detonated the motor while running high boost on a highway pull(I know stupid) about a year ago and Ash and myself pulled the motor.
Needlessto say, Ash was very surprised to know that I have been running 20-50w Castrol GTX in the motor for around 50k and when he took it apart, the bottom end looked awesome. The bottom end had very little wear and looked to be in great shape. As a matter of fact, he wanted to buy the motor from me or wanted me to use it for a serious hp build. By the way, I have a JDM motor in my tt now and it is running perfect.

Let me just say I have been getting mixed reviews on this issue and I know the Z has very low clearance and tolerance issues which calls for the thinner viscosity oil(10-30w).

Now here is the question: Does anyone here run higher weight oil on higher mileage Z's or do you keep with the recommended 10-30 even though the motor has more wear and tear? Also, Do you think the higher weight(10-40w or 20-50w) will help or hinder in higher mileage Z cars?

I appreciate any input given. Sorry for the long post.
