You really only need a basic set of mechanic's tools to do the job. Add for one BFH and breaker bar and you're good to go. I have an engine hoist and stand, you'll need those.....but otherwise the link that EricTTZ posted is pretty kick ass. As for cost, you can do an entire rebuild for under 1,000 if you don't replace the wiring harness and other things, but I wouldn't recommend that. If you are not going to go for crazy power, you can re-use your stock pistons and rods (just get them cleaned at the machine shop that does your block)....that will save you a huge chunk of money on forged parts.
