The shear quantity of fastener failures in the aircraft maintenance field is extreme. Philips are rarely used unless it's non-primary structure (closeouts, interior, avionics). Most aircraft manufacturers have moved away from philips head screws. Most skins, if not riveted with solid rivets or Cherry Max, are Offset Cruciform Torq-Set screws. The Torq-Set screw provides more surface area which prevents the bit, or screw head, from being chewed up as easily. AND keep in mind, that screws for structural purposes are virtually, if not completely, non existant. I do agree that using the proper sized bit is essential to preventing damage to any screw head.
