This is done to try to keep the coolant from leaving the cylinderheads too quickly, so the coolant can collect the heat out of the heads more effectively. You will find this headgasket design used on a lot of other cars with alluminium heads and multiple exhaust valves per cylinder..not just Nissan Ally cylinderheads that have the exhaust valves close to each other are vulnerable to localized overheating in the area between adjacent exhaust valves. It's also said that it can help to get a slightly higher pressure in the heads, so there's less of a chance for localized boiling points to occur So, in short...do NOT increase the size of the holes !
