and I seriously doubt 'soft valves'. Once they are worn they are worn, and operating temp make little difference. There is a test that can be performed with air pressure. you have to have the valves in the cylinder you are interested in checking in the closed postion. A fitting goes in where the plug mounts, and a controlled amount of air pressure is applied. The air pressure should stay even for a while (controlled bleeddown). If it drops faster than spec, you can acutally listen and determine the leak. If you hear air escaping via the T body, it is intake valve. If via exhaust, it is exhaust valve. If you hear it in the crank case (via oil filler or dipstick tube) it is rings. Find a shop with one of those and go from there.
