Message Oxidation is chemically the same thing as burning the oil. Coking is caused by thermal decomposition. This is a free radical chain reaction that is initiated when a carbon-carbon bond is broken due to high temperatures. The resulting free radicals can undergo a number of reactions, but the one of primary interest with regard to coking is polymerization into the very large hydrogen deficient molecules that form coke.
