Message a simple how stuff works or google search would have answered this question.

you need to first understand what makes the engine make power...basically three essential parts of creating power in an engine (all three must be present). 1-Air 2-Fuel 3-Spark

Increase air/fuel you'll theoretically increase power. No spark = no firing

A turbo takes your exhaust gases coming out of your engine and spools up a lil turbine to generate a lot of air to be forced into the engine, thus more air = more power.

That is just the BASIC concept, there is MORE in depth details which i don't feel like typing so read into it online.
