He comments:

"Nissan also has the variable cam timing.. it retards the cam in the lower RPM and then it advances it at some point (at a higher RPM). That could be part of the superiority in the bottom end that we're feeling."

What really happens:

The VTC advances cam timing by 10 degrees in the low and midrange RPM and then at a higher RPM it de-advances the cam timing. In stock form, this de-advancement is at 5900RPM.

I will agree with him that this is a contributor to bottom-end and midrange RPM performance though... without the advancement, the bottom and midrange is pretty weak.
