When the thermostat opens the coolant flow is reversed. I don't think it recirculates hot water when the thermo is open, I think it flows some of coolant from the radiator right back into the radiator.I'm tired and have alot of crazy thoughts as to why it flows that way, the coolant coming through the thermostat pushes it up that way, the coolant coming out of the heads pulls the flow that way. But the one thing I always found curious is that I can cruise down a long hill in netural, going quite fast, this cools the water in the radiator. I put the car in gear, rev it up, and that super cooled water almost instantly hits the water sensor. You can see the coolant temp drop 2-5 within 1 sec. So either that coolant flows in reverse to get to that sensor so quickly, or the coolant leaves the rad goes through the block, then through the heads, then out to that sensor. If that's the case the coolant must move at a speed through the system that I just don't see possible.
