| So in preparation for the big day, I get home Friday night and clean her up a little, then I take care of the inside. My timing gun was either broken or not liking the #1 coil pack as a pick up, so I couldn’t check my timing. I don’t have a boost leak tester, so I had to believe nothing had changed since I did my last test at Dave’s in July. I do however have a compression tester. I wish I didn’t :/ #1 165 #2 145 #3 145 #4 125 #5 75 #6 145
Cylinder #1 had a good amount of oil on the spark plug as well. After conversing with Dave, I believe it could be a worn valve guide. #5 obviously concerns me for good reason. I didn’t pour any oil into the chamber to check, but I doubt it would have helped. I’m 99% certain this is due to bent/damaged valves. The combination of these two factors is discouraging, but I push forward. I changed the oil from Mobil 1 Extended Performance (15W-50, which was BLACK after 2500 miles, supposedly a 15K mile oil, LOL) to Royal Purple 10W-30. I topped off the cooling system after a good 10 minute bleeding/burping. Close her up and get ready for the Dyno on Saturday morning. In lieu of the mechanical difficulty the motor is having, I reevaluate my tuning plan. Originally, I wanted to do 3-4 runs at a low street boost, around 11PSI and tune my A/F accordingly. Then I wanted to tune for a high boost, about 15PSI with a good A/F. Both tunes on pump gas. My new plan was to tune only for low boost, 11PSI, pump gas, good A/F. After the hour drive to NEDyno Tuning, the car still feels better than ever, strong like bull. Upon arrival I meet John, owner and lead operator of NEDyno. Very knowledgeable and friendly staff, appreciating the work we’d put into our Z’s. I end up doing my car first. Even with the compression issues, I have to say I am happy with my results. Here is my best run from Saturday, 11PSI of boost, (assumed) stock timing of 15°BTDC, 93 pump gas.
Compare that to my previous best dyno in 2003. 13.5 PSI (boost jets), stock timing, 93 pump gas.
Here are the two overlaid. The torque curve is flatter and kicks in earlier, and my air/fuel is much tighter. I think improvement in the torque response has a lot to do with the intercoolers and test pipes I’ve added recently. I think the overall value is low because I was only running 11PSI
No issues while on the dyno, except for my dipstick popping out once (???). Water temps never topped 170° and the plenum temperature maxed out at 105°. I was relived that I had finished with my car, and it didn’t blow up. Now I can help Don and the others with their runs. I got a quick lesson from John on how the S-AFC II works, then we strapped Don’s car on (TTwinZ). Ash-whore, I mean, Don, has an AshSPEC chip, so I was curious what was going to happen. He ran rich, really rich. So rich it was below 10:1. After cutting fuel back a little from 4-6K RPM, he got a solid curve between 11:1 and 12:1. We didn’t push his car past roughly 13 pounds because A) he didn’t have an aftermarket boost gauge and B) he may have a leaky turbo seal, and I don’t wanna be the guy that makes things go boom. Erich’s (Keaner) NA made some solid runs, and convinced a few people that a Specialty Z exhaust is the most BA exhaust for the Z. Erich did run pretty lean, for unknown reasons. I suspect O2 sensors, since the car has over 100K and they are the original O2s. However, he’s not throwing any check engine codes. Thoughts? Anton got some good time with his TT on the dyno. We did note in running his car that where you place the inductive RPM pick up is important. And I’m curious about something… When he placed it on the #2 coil pack connector, there was an intermittent response on the dyno between 5.5K and 6K. Once we switched it to the black PTU loop, this went away. Does this mean his #2 coil pack stopped firing for that RPM range? Donovan (Z32n/a14.124) put down some big numbers. Rounding up his car made 200RWHP, not bad for an NA with a few basic bolt-ons. Air fuel was rock solid with his Z1 ECU. He also demonstrated how to brake stand on the way out. Those BFG drag radials are smoky tires! Lastly I tried fixing Ricky’s idle issues on his newly converted TT. But he couldn’t replicate the problem reliably so wasn’t much we could do. All in all, a great day, beautiful weather and everyone drove home. I hope everyone had fun, and got some good baseline numbers for your car. Me? I’ll be saving for an IPP long block package over the next few months/years. Pussyfooting around at 11PSI is fine by me :) So those who dynoed and have Q's or just wanna show your charts, post them here, or you can email me if you don't have the viewer and I can post them for you. Thanks to all who showed!
