riding on the rim. happened to me, seen it plenty. you obviously keep decent tires on the car, so not suspecting the sidewall to be defective. the sidewall goes hot from the rim pinching it at low pressure, and eventually the the sidewall deteriorates to the point that it separates that cleanly from the bead and tread. this situation is expensive to me, so i've taken to checking tire pressures and at least glancing at each tire before i leave. mini-compressor is in car, not to mention cell phone. i quit carrying my spare, etc. to save weight. sucks. good luck.
