I know you know this, but for the sake of discussion, I want to throw out why the log-style is outspooling the equal-length. The exhaust gas velocity is higher thanks to the lower volume flow of the log-style. On the top-end that flow restriction becomes significant, thus you'll get just what you described - faster spoolup, less top-end.
