Message what lens are you using? That'll be a small factor as to how sharp the photo is at higher focal lengths.

I use a Tamron 1.4x Pro teleconverter on occasion when I need the extra reach so the 70-200 becomes a 98-280 (with a loss of 1 f-stop). With the IS on (mode 1 or 2) at 280mm, I've had no issues with camera shake. The IS is worth the extra $500 on the 70-200 f/2.8L. It's not cheap but it increases the keeper rate on the shots. It's a little bigger and heavier than the non-IS but you get use to it after awhile.
