It all depends on what you shoot. I like to photography autocrosses so the Mode 2 definately helps. I'm able to hand hold at ~ 1/80th and get good panning shots. For non-automotive stuff, I've been able to hand hold 1/15th indoors to do low-light portrait shots. With my 16-35 f/2.8L, I can barely hand hold at 1/30th. The IS is worth about 2 shutter stops so if you don't like carrying a tripod, it's pretty good but it does have limited uses since it doesn't stop the action. The 135 f/2.0L or the 85 f/1.8 are also good, fast lenses for indoor sports, school plays, etc.
