Message At the very end of drowning us in information (good information I might add), you throw this in.

"There are a few different theories on coolant temperature and most have their place. Cold water (under 170F) and hot oil (230F) make power; this is a proven fact and the rule for drag racing. In most other forms of racing and street applications the engine is under power for minutes or hours rather than a few seconds. In this case higher temperatures in the range of 190 to 210F are necessary for engine components to normalize. Many inherent or design factors determine this temperature; block and head castings, metal properties, proper fuel combustion and machined clearances. Either inherently or by design the VG appears to prefer 180 to 195F for optimum power output but they appear to mechanically "sound" the best when they are running 200-210F as we tend to run larger piston-wall cleanrances for our boosted applications."

You know, I sat here for a good ten minutes trying to think of how to respond to this but I kept coming right back to one glaring "coincidence". It's no secret that many of the electric fan alternatives out there don't exactly cool the car as well as mechanical (at least not in all the same situations). Many of us have seen temps in the very same range you mention and almost all of us have gone back to a mechanical solution as a result. In fact, I am one of the last hold-outs having had my electric fan setup for years now (having been a huge advocate) while at least a dozen others have gone back to what is proven and what works. Regretfully, I'm about to do the same.

Back to your statement. You do a fantastic job of throwing out words like "fact" and "proven" all around your statements but you and I both know the meat of it is pure and utter speculation on your part. That is, about the VG being "happier", so to speak, at higher than factory ideal temps. I could just be blunt and say it's utter bullshit but we both knew there are actually situations in racing where this comes into play and no doubt you'll drag up something to back it up even if it applies to .0001% of the population here. You don't see the Japanese clamoring to make racing thermostats that run the average higher, do you?

This isn't a direct bash on your electric fans as I think it'd be great if someone could figure it out and get it to work all the time, as good as stock or better. You might even be that person. However, I wont be surprised one bit when we start hearing reports from people saying their average temp is higher than it was before. I'm sure you'll be quick to point to this post to calm those concerns. If I'm totally off base then I'd love to hear more about your proof (or at least ideas) on this. Perhaps make a new thread specifically addressing this hypothesis you have. If it's sound then you wont mind the direct attention of people that have half a brain rather than cramming it into the bottom of a marathon post.

Other than that, great post.

amount of stupid people and stupid logic that dominate Twinturbo.net today."
