Message possibility of detonation and not backing off on boost when detonation occurs. Im not quite sure what you mean by concsistency in power when racing, but I remember once reading a huge arguement between Ash and Greg Dupree over the JWT vs Ash-Spec.

The arguement was over the secondary timing maps, and the best way to protect/save the motor in the event of detonation. JWT view is to run the motor rich, all the time, and put up with a small amount of detonation if it were to occur, and not retard timing. Retarding timing during detonation with out dropping boost causes (from my understanding) cylinder temps to skyrocket, which would be very bad. In order to safely reduce timing, you would also need to pull boost/add fuel.

Most of us use an EBC, and most of us do not hook up the factory boost cut solenoids to a relay to cut of the EBC to lower boost in the event of safety boost. My opinion is that JWT assumes that most people will not go this far, and that most will use an EBC, not hook up a boost cut, therefore there would be no way to cut the boost in the event of detonation if using an EBC, so to play it safe, they do not retard the timing. When detonation is detected, the system reverts to the secondary map, which is the same. It was my understanding that JWT would rather keep it "safer" all the time with a richer tune to prevent damage, while Ash retains the secondary maps as a safety boost type map, with a more agressive primary map tune.

They both sell there ECU's with boost jets, and if they used the ECU with the supplied method of raising boost (jets), neither should have a problem. Ash's agressive map would be fine, due to the safety boost solenoids still being active, and lowering boost, while reverting to Ash's secondary map and pulling timing/adding fuel.

The issue at hand as it seems to me is that not everyone will use boost jets, and most upgrade to an EBC for obvious reasons, but will not incorporate a type of boost cut, which to me seems foolish. The car was engineered with a boost cut solenoid for a reason. For someone who keeps there car in perfect running shape, who pays attention to everything, does little things like installs relays for a safety boost cut with an EBC, the Ash-Spec would be great. For your average person who doesnt know anything other than "this chip adds power", JWT would be the way to go.

These are just my thoughts, if i am wrong, correct me.

Here is Gregs post which supports what ive said.
